In the era of the administration of TNI General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, which will begin on October 20, 2024, Indonesia faces new challenges in terms of defense and security. The increasingly complex global context, with crises hitting various parts of the world, requires Indonesia to adjust its defense strategy.

The main focus of this new government is, of course, among other things, to strengthen the main tools of the weapon system (alutsista) to deal with threats and uncertainties that may arise in the future. Prabowo Subianto, as a former general and Minister of Defense, has a deep understanding of the needs and challenges in the defense sector. His extensive experience in the military field provides a solid foundation for formulating strategic defense policies.

TNI General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the defense equipment is the modernization and improvement of the capabilities of war equipment. This is to ensure that Indonesia not only has sophisticated war equipment , but can also operate it effectively in various situations. Furthermore, given global crises, such as geopolitical tensions in the Asia-Pacific, regional conflicts, and threats from international terrorism, it requires an adaptive and integrated response.

The Prabowo-Gibran administration has of course ensured that Indonesia not only strengthened its position militarily, but also built capacity for diplomacy and international cooperation. Strengthening defense equipment must be accompanied by efforts to strengthen strategic relationships with partner countries, as well as improve intelligence capabilities and early detection of threats.

Modernization of defense equipment is not only about purchasing the latest equipment, but also ensuring that existing defense systems can operate with good synergy. Human capacity building, training, and effective operational strategies are key to ensuring that investments in defense equipment deliver optimal results. With Prabowo’s strong background in the military, it is hoped that this administration can design a comprehensive and sustainable defense strategy.

In the midst of an uncertain global crisis, the biggest challenge for this government is to find a balance between the need to modernize defense equipment and responsibility for the national economy. Spending on defense must be managed wisely to ensure that the country’s resources are not only focused on military power but also on sustainable social and economic development.

Globalization and technological developments have brought significant changes in the world’s defense landscape, where tensions between major powers such as the United States, China, and Russia, as well as regional conflicts, have a direct impact on international stability and security. In this context, Indonesia must formulate a defense policy that is not only responsive but also proactive to overcome these challenges.

TNI General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto, who served as Defense Minister in this government, is known for his commitment to strengthening the capacity of the Indonesian armed forces. As a former high-ranking officer with extensive experience in the military, Prabowo has a deep insight into the needs of equipment modernization and military capacity building.

The defense policy promoted by Prabowo is likely to focus on investing in advanced technologies, such as fighter jets, warships and air defense systems, aimed at enhancing combat capabilities and ensuring preparedness against evolving threats. This modernization involves not only  the procurement of the main equipment of the weapon system (alutsista) but also the improvement of infrastructure and other supporting facilities that are vital for operational effectiveness.

Indonesia’s defense system, which includes the armed forces, police, and other security agencies, must be adapted to meet these challenges with a coordinated and strategic approach. Technological modernization, such as early detection systems, cyber defense, and intelligence analytics, is a crucial aspect to maintain national security in the midst of increasingly sophisticated threats . In addition, human resource development through training and skill improvement of defense personnel is also very important to improve preparedness and operational effectiveness.

Therefore, in the face of global challenges and the dynamics of an increasingly complex strategic environment, Indonesia’s national defense strategy must be developed with an adaptive and comprehensive approach. The new government , led by TNI General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, has a great responsibility to adapt the national defense strategy to the global changes that occur.

Therefore, adaptation to evolving threats, both in terms of technology and geopolitics, is the main key to maintaining state sovereignty and security. And the importance of integration and collaboration between various elements of defense and security cannot be ignored in this context. By combining resources from various branches of the military, government agencies, and the private sector, the proposed strategy will become more cohesive and effective.

This integration allows for better coordination in dealing with threats, from cyberattacks to regional conflicts, as well as ensuring that each element of defense functions synergistically to protect the country. At the same time, modernization is a crucial aspect of the defense policy expected of this new government. The development of advanced technologies , such as the latest cyber defense systems and defense equipment, will strengthen Indonesia’s military capabilities.

In addition, capacity building and training of military personnel are priorities to ensure readiness and effectiveness in dealing with various threats. This modernization must be carried out continuously and keep up with global technological developments to maintain strategic advantages.

International cooperation also plays an important role in strengthening the national defense system. Through strategic alliances and partnerships with friendly countries, Indonesia can improve its defense capabilities and obtain support in various forms, such as training, technology, and intelligence. This cooperation not only expands Indonesia’s strategic reach but also strengthens the country’s position on the global stage in the face of shared threats.
